Texas Central Railway's CEO has stepped down. The proposed line between Dallas and Houston is almost surely dead.

Plenty of people have been rooting for Texas’ high-speed rail project to fail from the moment it was announced.
I bet they are happy now...

The last hope is that Dallas and Houston being picked to be two of the 2026 World Cup cities will give this a boost.

The thing is. Even if they started construction at some point this year (which they obviously won’t), the bones for high speed rail wouldn’t be built in time for 2026.

High speed rail may be over, but Boring tunnels may begin to appear under Texas highways. Personally I'd prefer a Boring tunnel as it will afford the option of mass transit or personal vehicle at relatively high speed.

There is even less chance of a tunnel than the high-speed train. It's just not feasible.

And now that Musk is in financial trouble, he can't keep dumping cash into Boring Company like he's been doing. I doubt they'll survive more than a year or two.

Yeah, that's not going to happen either. Tunnel boring has been going on for 150 years and despite all the hoopla, Elon Musk hasn't added any revolutionary new technological advancements to the process. It is still exceedingly slow and expensive and the actual tunnel boring is not the most expensive part of the process. It is building all the stations, access points, ventilation, safety features, etc.

Down to 200 billion from 285 billion, that is still a lot of billion. As to boring tunnels in Texas, Musk is well underway with foot, mass transit and traffic tunnels. The highways in Texas already have rights of way and are well understood. It would be easier to drill under an existing right of way and surface at each entrance / exit.

None of that stuff is expensive either. The land acquisition, legal fights, and compliance ((like environmental & water) I guess you could sort of include that in safety-features) is over 60% of the cost, and what did Texas Central in, and has to be done before any machines or guys in yellow hats move. The actual construction stuff is relatively cheap.

Tesla is planning to bore under the Colorado River, they did a land grab and will now build a Boring company tunnel to connect under the river. The permit application is here https://abc.austintexas.gov/public-s...rtyrsn=5940796

According to this story https://electrek.co/2021/11/09/elon-...actory-austin/ Tesla bought about 2,000 acres across the river from the current Tesla property near Austin for $100 million dollars.

Musk has pledged over 70% of his Tesla stock as collateral for loans. He may be "worth" a bunch, but he is cash poor. That's part of why he's trying to get out of the Twitter deal.
