Mainly due to rental rates going up so much in Tucson, I might be moving to Killeen. Can you advise what areas to avoid ? Thanks !

Pretty much all of them.

Maybe check out Belton.

Unless you need to be near an Army base, there’s no good reason to move to the Killeen area.

Most folks will tell you to move to Belton or parts of Temple, or maybe Harker Heights, but not Killeen. It has one of the worst reputations in TX for crime and generally negative behavior.

If you must live in Killeen, run far away from any neighborhood that has these:

The far southern portions where all the new homes are getting built south of Stan Schlueter Rd are pretty safe. Not much happens in these areas. Especially an area south of Stagecoach. Generally, the safer parts of Killeen are in the Southern parts of town whereas the Northern parts are the "rougher" areas.

Crime and all I'd pick Killeen over Cove or Belton for things to do. But to live in a truly safe area, choose Harker Heights.

I probably should have said that I have family members in Austin and San Antonio but cannot afford apartments in those cities, Killeen and Temple seem to be the only affordable areas for me and I see that Temple has a bigger hospital, and a big VA Hospital, so it might be a better option. Thanks everyone for your input

Temple is a MUCH better option than Killeen, especially in an affordable apartment complex. Yes, Baylor Scott & White has a big hospital there, and so does the VA. (I assume you work in the medical field?) Most of the jobs in Killeen are restaurants and retail; there is almost zero industry there besides the Army. Temple has a much more diverse economy.

Is Killeen/Temple really that much cheaper than SA?

It's so quiet and safe in Belton. You should check it out. If you have to live in Killeen try some of the neighborhoods around Marsh Drive.

It’s probably the cheapest metro area that conveniently located (In the Texas Triangle). The median home price in the area is just over 200,000. Even if you exclude it to places you actually want to live in, 300,00”+ gets you in a really good area more times than not. The median home price in San Antonio is around 280,000. Still cheap. Probably the cheapest large city price, although Fort Worth side of DFW might go under the radar since it often gets lumped in with the rest of DFW. I have no clue what the price point is for a Desirae me neighborhood in San Antonio, though.
