What's Port Lavaca like as a beach destination? Seems like it's a little shorter drive from the metroplex than Corpus/Port A. And it's not Galveston which is a good thing. Any thoughts?

I'm the resident booster of Port Lavaca as a vacation spot. My family has been there 3 times and we like it because it's uncrowded and easy to reach from San Antonio. PL has a small municipal beach in the bay, so if you're looking to walk on miles of endless beach or surf, you'll be bitterly disappointed. It is a wonderful place to wade and sit on a beach chair to watch the waves and the boats. There's also a wildlife sanctuary next to the beach, with a great walkway that you can stroll along and look at the shorebirds and sandcrabs.

There are a handful of chain motels, among which the Motel 6 is the newest and best. For shopping, all of the necessities of life can be found at the WalMart Supercenter, conveniently located near the motels.

My family went to Galveston over spring break, for a change of pace, so feel free to ask specific questions about how PL compares to Galveston.

I stopped here once, when I went down to Port O'Connor. It seemed like a nice little town. I don't recall seeing a beach at all.
