Climate in some areas of Australia and Texas is similar (Adelaide or Melbournee for example). My family (wife and two kids) ponders a permanent move to either TX or Australia. No property taxes in Australia and Medicare available to families without paying hefty monthly premiums gives it a big advantage in my situation. Anyone who lived in both and can compare or advise?

Yes. Please either go to Australia or stay in Europe, since you want the taxpayers to fund your medical care.

Medicare in Australia, in comparison to how health care is run and paid for in the States, gives it an edge, not to mention our outrageous property taxes, electricity rates etc.

There is not much danger of gangs and crime in Australia from my experience. Both are great for outdoorsy lifestyle but Australia is a safer place to raise kids and more stable economically. If I had a choice I'd pick Australia.

Ps. If you don't know Texas, I assure you that there are not many here who are as pesky as some ladies on this forum .

Thanks. Some people are like nasty bugs - nothing to offer but a sting.

Are there seriously no property taxes in Australia? If so, that's awesome. That's almost enough to make me want to move down there as well.

Alfredzio, to answer your questions I contacted my good friend Barlow in Australia and his advice was "Run, don't walk, to the nearest airport, and hightail it down under". Barlow said that with "No property taxes in Australia and Medicare available to families without paying hefty monthly premiums gives it a big advantage in my situation". Barlow said too that the weather there (he's in Arlie Beach, Queensland) is like Texas Hill Country in the spring but for all the year round which, Alfredzio, is usually very mild and beautiful. Barlow said it's like that all over Australia, never gets cold.

I should note that Barlow has lived all over Texas and all over Australia so knows the facts. So, Alfredzio, that should answer your questions. Now, when you get settled in down there, put a shrimp on the barbie, pop open a Boags and think about us back here in U.S.A. And, as they say down under (at least in Queensland) "Ngali andja ngurba".

Stop and reflect a moment on what you're wanting in this life....freebies. I'd rather deal with nasty bugs than people who want, want, want, but don't want to do anything about it. I think I've heard it's called helpless. It reminds me of all the wanting but not putting forth any effort for themselves in rectifying the problems when Katrina hit.

I'm one of those people who won't enable anyone and feel everyone needs to fend for him or herself. Obviously though through no fault of my own, people who get government assistance in one way or the other I am helping to enable, far from my choice, but a reality.

We have enough of that nonsense in the U.S. Maybe Australia would be a better option.
