My husband has 20+ years in Estimating and as a Construction Project Manager. He was laid off from his job after 12 years and we have sent so many resumes out with no luck. We're also on Monster.com and Careerbuilder. So many companies now want someone with a degree, but my husband has worked so hard and has so much experience that he's never had time to stop and get a degree in Engineering or Construction Management.

We moved to Utah from Texas, 14yrs ago, and want to move back home around family. This would be a good time to move. My son is going to be stationed at Ft. Hood in July and will probably deploy by Sept 2010. We would like to live and work near there to help with his little girls and wife.

If anyone has suggestions on where else, in the Austin or Dallas,or anywhere in between, we can send his resume, please let me know.

Thanks

Distressed Wife

Just a suggestion. The LDS church is wide ranging and well connected with people all over the US. I have heard that the local bishop in the LDS wards is responsible not only for his own flock but for all the people who live within his area of responsibility. Call the local church, ask for an appointemnt and just go talk, he may be able to help.

My other suggestion is that y'all stay flexible and maybe accept a job outside his expertise for now.

Good luck with your search.

Been in your shoes and the best advice I can offer is to move if you can afford to and then hope for the best. It will be nearly impossible to find employment from out of the area - unless your husband has some reliable contacts in the industry. Once moved, there are "temp" services that might find work for him until he can get his foot in the door somewhere. Best of luck to you.

I'm not giving up on moving back to Texas. My son could be deployed as early as September, and we would very much like to get back there to help. The fact that my husband was laid off, after 12 yrs. is kind of a plus. Relocating won't be as hard. Except for the money aspect.

My husband, Brent, is a loyal, hardworking man. He has 20+ yrs experience in Industrial Construction Management. He's the best around and his former employer would tell you the same thing.

Hard to figure out what to do next. We've gone through all of our savings. Went from $120,000 a year to $400 a week unemployment checks. Something wrong with that picture. Have a son graduating High School in June. That monies gone for College.

I'm really not whining....really. Just thinking out loud.

Forward I go! :-)

the only good part of this is that your son stands a much better chance of getting grant/scholarship assistance now that your family income has dropped...

again would suggest using any contacts within LDS == which seems to be organization that does take care of its own when possible

check the Texas employment commission site
run search using BUILDING-GROUNDS CLEARING there were 193 jobs that popped up when I tried the DFW region
https://wit.twc.state.tx.us/WORKINTE..._BROWSE_SEARCH

or Construction 210--but some are not really what you want
https://wit.twc.state.tx.us/WORKINTE..._BROWSE_SEARCH
but as another posted said--most companies WON'T bother with someone applying out of state--
use your son's local address (from what I understood of your post--you have son in TX) and send out resumes/applications--try to get cell phone number here that will connect to your local phone out of state--there are ways it can be done from what I understand--have your son buy a local per-minute phone and mail it to you if nothing else...

We're not LDS.

My son is at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland right now. He'll go to Ft Hood July 25th.

My parents and another son live in Texas. Only thing is if I'm pretending to already be in Texas, hard to go in for an interview on a whim

I'm looking everywhere in Texas. Concentrating on 50 mile radius, either way, of Killeen. Thanks for your reply.
