Hang on Dorothy, you may be in for a rough ride when trying to predict cyclones by the color of the sky.

Don't care what those "experts" say. This expert knows that when the sky turns a weird color -- pink or green especially -- during a thunderstorm, it's time to head to the basement with sturdy shoes, handbag, car keys, cell phone, battery-operated radio, flashlight ... and maybe a margarita ...

On July 4th this past summer, we had a severe Thunderstorm here in Bethel Alaska and the clouds were green. This was a severe storm with a mesocyclone in it but nothing in the form of a tornado showed. The winds really picked up in front of the storm and once it passed it was all clear. This was by far the biggest storm I've ever seen and the same goes for a lot of other locals. My boss is from Minnesota and said if it got any darker green, there could've been a tornado.

When the sky is green adjust your TV Set.

However, if the sky looks threatening, take cover before its too late.
Usually, if you can see the tornado -- especially at night, you and your family is too close for comfort.

Here are fairly ominous clouds that moved through out ahead of a squall line here back in April. This storm did not produce a tornado, rather just strong winds and rain. The color of the clouds just are a sign of how much light is refracted and scattered as the clouds in a thunderstorm are much thicker (from 2000-50,000ft). And of course, the thicker the storm cloud and the higher the heights, the higher likelihood of hail or tornadoes.

It's required that when you head for the basement that you either take the margaritas with you or you have them staged there to begin with. I think it's the law. haha
