This afternoon, I walking to lunch in Chinatown and passed a woman who was removing graffiti off the heritage sign of Labor Lyceum on the corner of Spadina Avenue and St. Andrews Street. She seemed to be just a pedestrian since she carried the materials to clean the sign in her purse. I was unable to stop and speak to her, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a group in Toronto that does this kind of work, cleaning graffiti off of public signs or spaces? I am very interested in the topic and found Toronto graffiti a strong symbol of the city - but yet there are many people (Rob Ford) rather obsessed with removing it. I assume the woman I saw this morning is not a part of Goodbye Graffiti which would probably be more formal with their removal.
Contact your local Toronto Police Service station, and talk to the desk officer, who can refer you to local groups who do that kind of thing. The Community Service officer in each of the 17 Toronto Police divisions co-ordinate projects like that.
In Boston, one cannot remove graffiti without approval, from my understanding.
I hate graffiti. I am 54 y.o. I hate tattoos also. Maybe younger people love it or just accept it.
I would spray over or try to remove minor tags with brushes or graffiti removal spray from Home Depot -- but I could/would get arrested.
So I take photos and submit them to the city's Citizens Connect app. Some graffiti is thus removed; others tags won't be or can't be, due to height restrictions and such.
The walls along the MassPike into Boston are disgraceful...or colorful and stimulating if you like tagging and bombing.
