We had same issues till yesterday but I signed a lease today for a house in Mississauga. I voted for oakville since that was my first choice. I hope some Ontarian will give you an educated answer. I'm new so my opinion doesn't count. Good luck!

Find a place to live close to work as commuting around the Toronto area can be challenging..

You can try Mississauga itself. There is also Oakville which is more expensive, Brampton and Milton

I wonder if Oakville schools are worth all the extra money to go to Oakville?

Well Oakville is home for a lot of Bay Street bankers, middle or SR. Management and professional, the Demographics of Oakville compile of mostly upper middle class, so it is a safe assumption that school, safety etc. are better than Toronto & Mississauga, but housing is also more expensive and you might have a problem of “keeping up with the Jones” mentality, if you like diversity, Oakville is not the right place for you.

Jonses are the ones who should be concerned about keeping up with us, they'll have to stoop really low to meet our minimalist standards. I do value diversity and my children could certainly learn a few lessons from Asian kids about being competitive, hard working and of course abstinence is not a bad virtue either
