My 2004 Rav4 has 186k miles and is leaking oil again after the gasket thing was replaced. The mech said it was leaking all over the pan but there is no visible drip running to the ground. The shop isn't sure where the leak is coming from but the last time they looked at it the guy said something ranging in the $800 to $900 to fix it.

Should I have the repair shop investigate again? Will they charge me for finding the leak? The car is paid off and besides the oil leak it's running fine. Should I invest in fixing the oil leak or trade it in for a new/ used car?

How much is actually leaking? Where is it leaking? If not much I would just drive it.

I don't see any oil leaking on the floor. The mech said it's leaking somewhere in the engine pan or something.

I would keep checking the oil level daily for a bit to get an idea how much it's losing.

I'd just drive it. It wouldn't be the first old car that leaked oil. It will probably last you another 100k miles.

Keep the car , start saving for another. I have a 2008 Rav4 with 170k on it , no leaks, its paid for. I just discussed this last night with someone who has a ford focus with 190k on it. Drive it until she blows .

I agree that you should just drive it but keep an eye on the oil and add when needed. You could actually clean the engine and that may help find the leak.

I would inspect the motor starting at the oil pan and moving up the source of the leak using an inspection mirror and flashlight. Otherwise have somebody else do it for me, and should not take very long to find the source of the leak if any. The RAV4 should be on floor jacks, at least at the front, in order to get underneath and look up along the side of the oil pan.

Probably the o ring is not sealing where the oil filter goes in. They have those o rings and the filter slides up inside. They have to be on there just right, or they will leak. It is easy to mess it up when reinstalling. That would be the first place to look. If whoever changed the oil forgot to put an o ring back on it, it will leak.
