Yes, he (Dr. Gilbert) probably has not found the problem. But wouldn't the first step towards finding an intermittent problem be to attempt to reproduce it, even by artificial means if needed?
That's exactly right. The first thing you have to do to try to reproduce an ECU problem is to do it by artificial means on a closed track...and see what are the exact factors that cause the issue to take place. Once you get this figured out, you can start to simulate more natural scenarios on the track.
Not a good day for Toyota. An owner of a 2nd Gen. Prius had to use a CHP vehicle to help slow his car after unintended acceleration and unresponsive brakes. The CHP vehicle was alongside the Prius and communicating with owner helping him, finally using his vehicle's rear bumper to help slow the Prius to a stop. Being reported on the National news, and of course here locally in San Diego County no less.
News report on one of the morning national news shows about a man in California yesterday in a runaway Prius--with video. CHP verified his brake lights were on, that was braking and emergency brake was on, the driver verified his floormat was out of the way, and he couldn't turn it off at first. The cop ended up getting in front of him and slowing him and helping him stop. They reached speeds up to 90.
The owner reported that earlier he'd gotten a letter saying his car was recalled for this issue yet when he showed up at the dealer they told him his car was not part of the recall. He wasn't happy. Sounds like Toyota still has a way to go to get a handle on it.
While I too think the odds are slim of this happening to any one person with a Toyota, the negative publicity that keeps coming up isn't going to help them, especially in the long run.
Shoot, on this thread the Pinto's been mentioned...think they'll be mentioning Toyotas running away in 2045?

I am sure she did everything wrong too and the Toyota is totally blameless.

With all the great deals Toyota is offering now, I'm thinking of picking up a new Camry (currently driving a 2003 Camry w/130k+ miles on it) since they offereing 0% financing. Do you think I'm nuts or smart?
Wow, this whole thing has just gotten really sad. The Prius was already my least favorite car, but the unintended acceleration brings it to a whole new level of pathetic. Only reason I could see someone buying one is if they needed "status" among their smug liberal peers.
Calico696: Forget the Camry and get a Fusion Sport. It will give you everything a Camry will and more (except unintended accel) and be much more fun to drive.
