I'm thinking of hitchhiking from where I live in Minnesota to San Francisco Bay Area. I know someone a few people in the area. I don't have a car, but I've always wanted to try walking that distance my whole life. Any suggestions of precautions, and advice? Anyone done anything like this recently? What are best and fastest routes? What are things I should look out for? Things I need to be aware of? All kinds of things like that. My dad is thinking of buying me a small truck but I dont yet have my license
A lot of areas have laws against hitching. Not to mention it's simply not safe. Instead hook up wiht someone with a reliable car and license and agree to foot the bil for the gas and drive it with someone you can vet in advance to be sure they aren't a serial killer or someone who would get on your last nerve before you cross the first state line.

I have just finished reading a book about a guy who hitchhikes across the US for many years. He stated the most problems that he had came from cops, but he made sure to look clean cut and presentable before, and the cops just gave him a warning.

Uh ... I think hitchhiking is not such a great idea as you are placing yourself in risky situations where you may find yourself at the mercy of a certified loony tune! Too many crazy folks out there to even risk it especially if you are female.
There's about a 90% chance when hitchiking that you'll run into a problem or complication that will effect the rest of your life.
I read recently that over 345 bodies are found along the major highways every year. And there are a lot of missing people that haven't been found.
OP, have you thought of contacting one of those drive-away car places. They have customer cars that need to be driven to various destinations. It costs you only for the gas you use. You pick up the vehicle at the agency and drive it across the country to the receiving agency.

And he's a guy. Based on the user name and post, I think the OP is at best a teenage girl who doesn't seem very streetwise at all. Definitely not someone who should be hitching across the US.
