I have no idea where City Island is. I live on Staten Island within 500 feet of the Verazzano Narrows Bridge and I do not drive across it, ever. I allow my husband to drive me over when absolutely necessary. Poor man has to drive over it daily to go to work. Prior to stopping cars on the SI Ferry to Manhattan (9/11/01), I would take the ferry into the city (Manhattan) and a tunnel to either Brooklyn or NJ to go where I needed to go. It made many of friends really understand my bridge phobia to learn that I would take a 1.5 to 2 hour trip to get to Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn rather than bop across the bridge (I can see Ft. Hamilton from here) which is about 15 minutes across the bridge. They stopped inviting me to visit and instead they come to me.

My husband is incredible. He has seen me reduced to tears or in pain from muscle spasms from worry about crossing a bridge. Those other drivers are insane - and I don't relish flying through space when they knock me and my car off. I cannot fall off a tunnel.

City Island is little inhabited island up in the Bronx, out in Long Island Sound. It's a neat little place, but it's not a borough.

Personally, I love the VZ. The view of Manhattan is just marvelous. Then again, I love the Big Apple.

More about the amazing bridge here http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/new-bridge-in-mexico-comes-loaded-with-big-dreams/2012/01/23/gIQAWWaHYQ-story.html (broken link) (scroll to read all 3 pages). It's feared the highway will facilitate drug couriers.

What I find amazing, is that the total COST of building this complex, difficult 130-mile (240-km) highway, with dozens of mountain tunnels and bridges across sheer ravines, was equal to what the state of Maryland spent last year, just to build a short 18-mile "intercounty connector" highway over gently rolling pastures. I think the U.S. needs to contract out its road building to Mexican firms, from now on.

Wow!! This is really eye catching. I wonder how thrilling and adventurous it would be crossing this bridge.
