Stick with the big name corporate hotel chains like choice hotel, Howard Johnson or best western. real classie hotels with free breakfast. skip the motels chains and save your self the headaches
Best Western hotels are not 'corporate' owned. Best Western is an association of individual owners who share a name and a reservation system. Best Western does not own a single hotel.
We usually use Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn. We have driven across country a dozen times and never had a problem.
I do my research on Google Maps before we leave for Florida, and pick out 2 or 3 motels in areas where we're likely to stop, having checked reviews on tripadvisor. There is also at least one website that has lists of bedbug reports--I didn't save the link, but I'm sure it would be easy to find.
So far we've had good luck. I also give the room a quick once-over before bringing in just our overnight bags. And I keep them off the floor, putting them on the (usually) provided folding luggage rack.
We usually do the central route, from Toronto, through West Virginia, but may be doing 95 this fall (visiting family.) So I'll look into that motel in NC!

I don't necessarily agree with this. Yes, we stay in some pretty nice places sometimes, but I'm also open to a well-reviewed Super 8 or other budget chain. We did this in April 2011, in Savannah, and it was just fine--cleanliness and management are the most important things (although any hotel, however luxurious, can have an outbreak of bedbugs.)
