As you have discovered, there are dozens of places and 'levels' to stay. Beach is ok, snorkeling is ok, scuba is so-so unless you are comfortable with deep drift dives, and certified. The 'Americanized' off hotel campus bars/restaurants can vary from Spring Break type joints to decent.

Chichen Itza is a good half day+ trip, though I rec'd the pricey puddle jump flight to the ruins vs the long cab ride/longer bus ride. Isla Mujeres is a quick ferry ride to see a slightly commercialized old fishing village...

A quick puddle jump flight to Cozumel is worth a day, too, imo. Or, just R&R on beach, pool, etc at your hotel. It can get rainy in late August, Sept, etc. And, hurricane season is now through late Nov, fwiw.

TA has laundry list and lots of info via the tabs, for TTD...do some reading. It will be better than a poster's anecdotal opin on where to stay, imo:

Cancun Tourism: 110,816 reviews of Cancun, Mexico Vacations | TripAdvisor

None of us are travel agents, but the web is your friend: do some hunting for 'packages' after reading some of the TA info.

I stayed in Cancun for 6 nights in Nov. 2011 with my fiance, had all inclusive stay at Park Royal in the Hotel Zone, $18xx.xx for airfare, hotel, shuttles to and from airport. I'd say it was a good deal. The resort was nice but the food wasn't different from day to day which made it hard to enjoy. People warn against hurricane season, it was sunny every day there and the weather was perfect, mid to low 80's for highs and lows in the 60's.

check cheapcaribbean.com they often have good deals... also check orbitz vacation packages and search online for orbitz coupon codes to use with the vacation package, sometimes orbitz has a $100-200 off a package with a minimum 5, 6 or 7 night stay. Check groupon.com too, they have a getaways section now with discounted travel offers and if I recall I saw cancun on there a couple days ago.
