We're headed off to Abaco this summer. We rented a house right on the water and it has a boat, so hubby wants to bring his fishing tackle. Fishing is his thing. We're flying United down to Marsh Harbour. We can get the two piece poles and put them into a tube carrying case but does anyone know if you can carry those on? We don't want to check them unless absolutely necessary. The tube will be about 3-4' long. The policy isn't 100% clear from United and people I've talked to seem to have different experiences. Have any of you carried fishing poles on like this?

I usually check mine in ABS tubes. But that is in AK and Cnd where everyone has them while traveling. I have seen them carried on within AK, but I don't think from lower 48. (Thank goodness for SWA, checked bags / poles / coolers fly free... even tho I'm a 1M miler on UA, I seldom fly them for recreation.

Oh I wish SW flew there but no go! The fees can add up quick so we're hoping to carry on. Policy says $100 for fishing poles but I think that's the long poles (6'+) and the policy reads that way. ABS tubes is a good idea - lot cheaper than buying travel cases.
You aren't going to be able to carry them on if they are 4', even 3' might be pushing it. And it also depends on the type of plane--if they don't fit into the overhead, you're going to have to check them.
I think they'll have to be checked in; never seen it any other way. I have a pack pole that would fit into a carry-on, but it's a fly rod/spinning rod combination for light tackle only. I doubt if they make such a thing for ocean fishing.
Since we only have fly rods that break down right now, we're likely going to pick up a few new rods for the trip. I am partial to the St Croix rods, so that's likely what we'll get (hubby loves to keep me happy!). I know St Croix has rods that break down into two pieces. Guess, we'll have to figure on checking them. It's a pretty small prop plane over to Marsh Harbour. Mostly going to be bonefishing and some light tackle off the reefs so no heavy action rods needed.

2 checked bags, up to 50 lbs. each and within ther size restrictions, go free on Southwest. "Your 3rd through 9th bag or item will incur a charge of $50 per piece, and any bag or item thereafter will be $110 per piece." Of course, even with two free checked bags the total fare doesn't necessarily work out cheaper than others. But worth checking if one is going where they fly.

OP, you did phone United, right?
I did but they have what I would call a vague policy. Basically they're treated the same as skis but this is really for one piece poles. At $100 for carryon price, that's pretty steep. That's why we thought we would get poles that break down and hopefully carry on. Lots of people bring poles over to Abaco so this can't be a new issue I'm having. I wish I could get someone at the local airport to answer the question! They would know.
Seems like it may be cheaper to buy fishing gear when you get to your destination.
I agree - we've bought new rods for almost every fishing trip we've taken. We only pack the bare min of tackle and the reels.
