I'm flying to Asia for the second time next month. However, I have terrible motion sickness. The first time I flew, I was sick for the entirety of the 12 hour flight. It was the worst experience of my life. I'd love to not have to repeat this!

Any suggestions as to what I should do to avoid this?

I have tried: scopalomine (the patch you put behind your ear, turns out I'm allergic to it), the wrist bands, Dramamine, Bonine, eating ginger, drinking lots of water before the flight, etc. I talked to my doctor and there aren't really prescription motion sickness medications.

Any suggestions would be wonderful Thank you!!

I was being seen by a neurologist for benign positional vertigo, which he was able to resolve for me. During my treatment, I asked about medications to prevent seasickness, as I was about to go on a cruise, and on several previous cruises I had experienced terrible seasickness, admittedly under rough sea conditions.

The neurologist explained to me that seasickness (and other kinds of motion sickness) is caused by the brain's being confused by mixed signals: the eyes tell the brain that the body is not moving, but the inner ear tells the brain that the body is moving a lot. Nausea is the brain's response to the mixed signals. This is probably why I always got carsick from trying to read while a passenger in a moving vehicle, but never if I am driving; the driver's eyes tell the brain the same thing that the inner ear is conveying, i.e., I'm in motion.

According to the neurologist, Valium is will stop this confusion from arising, because Valium basically shuts down the inner ear's messages to the brain. He prescribed a few Valium tablets for my cruise, and I took them and had zero seasickness problems. That may have been due to the relatively calm sea conditions throughout the cruise, but if I were ever to go on a cruise again, I'd probably try to get a prescription for a few Valium before I went.

Maybe see a specialist like a neurologist. Another thing is what you are doing right now, worrying about the flight and if you will get sick will only make it worse. Some type of anti anxiety medication could help. It also could help you get to sleep on the flight too. Not saying you have a fear of flying or anything but you clearly have a fear of getting sick which will make it worse.
