The family is thinking of driving on Interstate 95 from New York to Richmond VA on Thanksgiving Day. How will the traffic be on that day? I expect the day before (Wednesday) to be terrible but I wonder if Thanksgiving will be even worse?

Is there some website that will tell people what days around Thanksgiving are best for travel on America's Main Street-- Interstate 95?

Well, I can tell you it's horrible to drive around the DC area at Thanksgiving, actually anytime of year...LOL. I remember my first year of living in Virginia and I lived in Stafford, south of I-95 and worked off of the beltway, in McLean. It's about 30 miles from Stafford to McLean but you know what? We got out of work early and it took me 2.5 hours to get home...

if you plan to drive on the day before Turkey Day, leave early early or late late...there is no exact good time. Good luck!

We'll be heading down I-95 on Thanksgiving as well, albeit from Northern VA to South Carolina. As mentioned, that road is definitely a crapshoot on any day. My guess is that if you are able to leave early enough in the morning (say 6am if not earlier) you will miss most if not all of the people making "local" trips to visit family and friends for dinner.

Default There is an alternative

I have driven this route on Thanksgiving. My main problem is avoiding the DC area. At Baltimore, take Route 301 down to Carmel Church Va back to I-95 to Richmond. It worked for me. Check with AAA to see if there is a problem with that route. Good Luck!

It sounds like it is going to kill the entire day for you. I personally HATE to travel for the holidays, I prefer the time to spend with my daughter and to rest. Be safe if you decide to make the drive.
