Hello,

I am heading off to Italy in less than 2 weeks!! I'm both excited and nervous being that this is my first solo trip abroad! As a solo woman, I'd love to hear about your experiences traveling through Italy! Please and thanks!

Love Italy...haven't traveled there alone so I can't speak to that, but I think you will be just fine. You will probably be hit on fairly regularly, as I was even WITH my husband right beside me! LOL But it wasn't out of line and not in a harassing manner, so no worries there.

Enjoy!!! Venice is one of my most favorite cities.

I am not a female but I've seen that the Italian men can get quite aggressive to solo women in a slimy sort of way. Just do what the Italian women do and shoo them away like nuisance flying insects.

Naples is sketchy as well, watch your purse.

I was in N. Italy about 3 yrs ago. The Italian men were very gentlemanly, no aggression an no hitting on me or any other women that I saw. I will say, IMO the Italian men are the best looking in the world.
Take the usual precautions that you would take in any large city, and you will be fine. As with any large city, be wary of pickpockets and scams.
You don't say where you will be in Italy, I loved Italy and really enjoyed Venice once I got away from the huge crowds of tourists.
Enjoy!

Depending on your race and nationality you may be at risk for some negative experiences. If you are a Black American woman you will generally get positive attention from Italian men but you may have an issue with men in general if they can't tell if you are American. There is a perception that African women are prostitutes so you may get men that approach you as such. You may also get questioned by the police. While being solo may increase the chance that you might be treated that way it can still happen if you had a companion or were with a group. When you are out at night just keep a lookout for someone following you, it happened to me when I was Florence and it also happened in Paris. The Florence incident was while I was walking with three other women and two men starting following us and we had to tell them to back off before they stopped.

Now other than that Italy is awesome, I have been to Rome, Milan, Florence, and Venice and so far Florence is my favorite but there are many other locations that I still want to see. One of the best things about Italy is that their train system makes it very easy to travel to all of the major cites in very little time. You may be surprised on how much distance you can cover using the trains, if haven't already you should use trenitalia's site to help you with your planning. Make sure to watch out if they have any deals that you can take advantage of while you are there.

I traveled thru Italy few years ago... but I did it after living there for 2 years solo. I believe that you should keep your common sense. Italy is generally safe (as the rest of Europe despite all things happening lately.)

If you are from big city, use your street skills

I am a black woman. I have heard about the prostitution situation before. I do have my train ticket but thanks for the suggestion! I'm looking forward to the trip!
