At the end of May, my wife and I will be vacationing in the Grand Cayman. This will be our first trip by plane with our son, and I'm *REALLY* nervous about it. My son will be 19 months and will be sitting in our lap, but now I'm wondering if that's a good idea or not. My fear is that he will be uncomfortable, scared, and cry uncontrollably and bother everyone else on the plane. Total flight time from D.C to the island (via Philly) will be about 5.5 hours.
Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on traveling with infants that age?
Have his favorite playthings handy. If he uses a bottle, make sure he has plenty available: milk, apple juice, water. Good supply of diapers. 5.5 is a longtime for a baby to be silent. Good luck.
I have been there, it is very stressful! If you can get him his own seat, I would. That said what the above poster said are great suggestions. Lots of games, favorite snacks, give him a bottle or sippy cup to drink while the plane is taking off and landing to help his ears pop.
One couple put together a care package for everyone on the plane (story in the news). I thought it was adorably thoughtful, taking the stress off a bit!
For one thing, go to the child's doctor now and get a decongestant and a mild pain killer. Give those to the child before the flight to help reduce the ear pain from the pressure change of take-off and landing.
If you have opted to save money by carrying your child on your lap, please keep all parts of the child confined in your own seat area. Your neighbors on the plane are not going to be good natured about your baby's arms and legs flailing against them.
As long as the parent is calm, children ride on planes the same as they ride in cars.
At 11.75 months old, my daughter slept on a flight from Sacramento to Detroit via PHX. Slept almost the whole way, waking up as we touched the ground.
2 weeks later, when she was 12 months old, she slept the whole way home too.
