The thread on vacations from hell got me thinking about this. As a kid we went on many family visits that were 18 hour drives where my parents drove with only necessary stops such as for gas and food. Asking to stop to use the bathroom was a big no no.

Now when I go visit family and it entails a long road trip not only do I stop once in a while but I don't drive for more than ten hours in a day. I think the journey should be just as much fun as the destination. If I can't afford to make the stops I don't make the trip to begin with.

What about all of you? Do you make frequent stops or "just go?"

Years ago for destination driving we use to drive 10-12 hours a day with one or 2 stops. As we grew older we now limit it to 6 hours daily and potty stops at least once every 2 hours.
If we are sightseeing or on vacation we just go and stop whenever we see something that peaks our interest just for the fun of it. We don't make motel reservations when we do this and so far have not had trouble finding a place to overnight.

When I go somewhere, it's to GET there...not to "experience the trip"...so no...I don't stop anymore than needed!

I don't enjoy "car trips"....I'd rather blink my eyes and be where I want to be! If anyone knows how to do that, please, let me know!!!!

I stop as often as I need to. This includes stops to eat, to use the restroom, and to sleep (especially sleep).

No. If that's your intent, take a flight.

Depends. If I'm moving or by myself, I just want to put as many miles between me and where I started in the morning as possible. I'll usually drive for 15-17 hours (~1000 miles) before taking a break.

If it's with friends and we have no real schedule, then I love taking breaks and exploring. My friends and I once pulled over in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave desert to go exploring in some rock formations and we had a blast.

I take my time and don't drive more than 400-500 miles a day. I get off the interstate once or twice a day and stop at places. I make advance motel reservations so I can dilly-dally along the way if I please.

As a kid a vacation was riding in the back seat-- if you couldn't see it from the car it wasn't worth seeing. We actually drove through Williamsburg Virginia with folks scurrying to get out of the way. We had a big Pontiac so they could see us coming a couple blocks away. My dad could drive forever because he loved it so much....that was his generation's thing.

Depends on the trip. If its a business, and time matters - I try to cut the leisure to minimum. Stops are fine, and needed, but they are fairly short.
Now, if this is a vacation type of a road trip - I do take my time, and usually do a careful planning. Where I want to stop and what kind of stop it will be. Most of the times I plan my route to make it maximum enjoyable - a scenic to admire, interesting places to visit, selected places to eat and sleep. I can drive many miles in a day, but it doesn't have to be a boring, or stressful.

I stop about 150-200 miles after I start. After that, I don't stop except to use the restroom, fuel up, and grab a bite to eat.
