Yes, I agree with everyone recommending "downtown", but where downtown? This depends upon your interests.
What do you want to do while you're in Toronto? Restaurants? Nightclubs? Museums and art galleries? Shopping? Live theatre?
I think if you could find a place to stay close to the intersection of College Street and University Avenue, or Dundas and University Avenue, you'd be quite central, and it would be pretty easy to travel to lots of attractions. North of there is Yorkville (trendy upscale, restaurants and shopping). South of there is the "Entertainment District" (nightclubs and theatre). Southwest of there you find the trendier, hipster neighbourhoods, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc..
On my frequent trips to Toronto, I have stayed in a variety of locations from Mississagua to Victoria Park and the 401, to the downtown and midtown areas. They ALL have their pluses and minuses. Often, my choice was largely dependent on the deals that I could find and my budget that year.
I agree with Ottawa that the Midtown area around tehe university of Toronto is one of the best areas as there are a lot of great ethic restaurant as well as its proximity to the TTC and so many other attractions. As i noted before, I would often stay in student housing which is an option during the summer.
Personally, I did not care for the large megahotels near the lake as you had to walk under a couple of underpasses.
Making an extended weekend trip with my wife to Toronto in mid-July. We're not looking to make it an extravagant trip... just a cheaper getaway.
We'll be using either hotwire or priceline name your price so I really just need to know the areas on where to look.
That's where my question arises. What is a good area to stay in Toronto? Prefer to not really have to drive everywhere although we will be driving there.
We wanted something similar a few years ago, so we choose a X brand with an airport location. Well, it really wasn't near the airport and even if it had been, the metro does not go to the airport. If we did it again, we would just bite the bullet and stay downtown I think. We spent most of our time and money taking a taxi to the metro station and taking the metro to town. If you don't want to stay downtown find someplace really near a metro stop.

There is currently a rail link directly from the airport (Terminal 1) to DT Toronto called the UP Express and will have one from the Airport to DT Toronto vice versa in 25 minutes. It still doesn't beat a DT hotel but is handy for those flying into Toronto and who don't want to pay expensive Taxi fares to get into or out of the city. This service started last year so when you were in Toronto it wasn't operational.
Got a 4 star for 120 dollars in Yorkville. Thanks for all of the advice. Hoping for a nice visit.
Is the hockey Hall of fame worth it?
I dislike hockey as a sport but I thought that the Hockey Hall of Fame was well worth the money. If nothing else, watching the people make it worth it.
