Seville and Cordoba in Andalusia region are great too.

Al these depends on what your interests are.
I love Madrid and surrounds, but how about Salamanca?
Next recommendation would be Burgos (I think it's the most 'contented' place I have ever visited.)
Finally, Bilbao, stunning.

The thing about Venice, it seems to me, is that people almost always either love it or hate it. Nobody's luke warm on Venice. Me? It's my favorite city I've ever visited.

Now... I'm heading back to my London thread.
Thank you - I read and appreciated your post over there!

Yep, hated Venice but it's my sisters favorite city ever visited. She thought Florence was a bust and hated Rome and Vienna - I loved them all. We're pretty consistently opposite when it comes to travel - whether it's rural, small city, or big city.

Do take another look at Budapest - i absolutely adored it and will go back for sure. It's a gritty, beat up city (evidence of siege of Budapest all over the place) and sort of odd layout - but oh man the art, architecture, music, poetry, brain power, food, history. Sigh. Full disclosure - I'm a Jewish hunky from the rust belt so may be predisposed to that whole scene

The Hungarian Parliament at night. Modeled after the Westminster

My husband speaks fluent Spanish, so we probably ought to consider going somewhere in Spain. We've been to both Madrid and Barcelona before.

I don't think I've ever heard of Burgos. Could you tell me a little bit more about it? And Bilbao? Yeah, maybe.

You know, I've got to tell you... your sister has better taste than you do.

I just realized that nobody has mentioned Lisbon. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever really even seen a thread where it's mentioned. (Of course, I don't hang out on this thread quite as much as some of you do.) But anyway... has anybody ever been there? If so, what was your impression?

my sister thinks so too!

Hey maybe Budapest is meant to be for you! I hope you love it as much as your parents and I did! And like someone further back in the thread posted - we all know those iconic (and decidedly non-gritty) scenes from the city. Ohhhhh, I'm planning my London trip and missing Budapest!

Ha - my sister? Yes, that sister - she fell in love in Portugal and with Portugal. Lisbon and I forget where else now. She's away right now but I'll try to get some feedback from her when she's back.
