^^^

Day rates exist because the hotel can have the late housekeeper clean the room and keep it in the inventory for that night.

booked the room for the prior night and it's also paid for...staying for total of 4 nights. Now hotel has 24hr desk, but is it also necessary to tell them prior that you are coming that late or since it's already paid for it's understood that they can't give them room away?

It's good to let the hotel know you're planning a very late check-in, lest the clerk think you're going to no-show (happens fairly often) and possibly give the room to someone else.

In which case the hotel can and does make alternate placement. Another hotel,in which they pay for that one day. Ohh and you don't get a refund ..It's one of the little "terms" they can utilize.
Your pre pay doesn't seal the deal in stone.

I check into hotels early all the time. Usually around noon. They always say they can't guarantee anything but I've never had a problem.

3am check in and you're paying for the whole previous night. I could maybe see a 10 am check in possibly happening, but 3 am would still definitely be considered the night before 99.9% of the time.

Deposit only to hold a room, it's not pre-paid. Many hotels after 8pm will release the held room unless other arrangements were made, and give that room to a walk in who pays then. That happen in one of our cases last year. We walked in at close to 8pm and were told that there was no rooms available but if we waited a few more minutes until 8 then they had a reservation on one room that they would cancel and give to us. We waited, we got it.

Yeah, it's hard. We have a 6 a.m. arrival and were told they would hold our luggage and we could have breakfast there. LOL. I want to sleep! Really not sure what we will do either. That's a lot of time to kill for even for a noon check-in, which I am grateful for. At least its not 3 pm.

8pm seems early to declare someone a no show.
