I've only been to Lisbon and I had flown there from Barcelona and then flew out of Lisbon to Miami.
But I plan on doing Lisbon/Porto this fall and my plan is to do as you mentioned...fly into once city and out of the other.
The reason is because I prefer to fly into Lisbon and then go to the Algarve region which is closer to Lisbon. Then make my way "up" to Lisbon, and then finally, further "up" to Porto where I will end my trip and leave out of.
Now that's just my plan...that could change based on flight prices which I am starting to eye now. I might have to fly in to Porto and out of Lisbon instead, which would basically reverse the order of my agenda...
One can also take the Alfapendular train, which is quite efficient, fast and affordable.
