Tipping has gotten out of hand.
It certainly has. To your example about the doughnut, there is a doughnut shop across the street from my neighborhood that has a tip jar at the cashier. Also, the Mexican restaurant across the street has a tip jar for to go orders. Dominoes Pizza now asks if you want to add a tip to your payment for carry out orders.

Our local ice cream shops have tip jars on the counters as well as hanging outside the drive-through windows. It feels a little awkward when the kid waiting on you gives you your change and then watches you expectantly for a tip but why does someone need a tip who just walked five steps, took 15 seconds to put soft serve ice cream in a cup, then walked back five steps to hand it to you?

Need as thread devoted to tipping! My biggest pet peeve. Pay the person an honest wage and do away with them.

I pumped gas all my life at my dads gas and service station. We used to do windows, check oil, fluids and air tires. At one point some people would tip me because other stations didn't do it.

The article the OP posted is a big nothing burger! Some idiot wrote an article about a default tip option on a credit card payment unit.

It's not like Frontier is posting notices asking you to tip their workers.

C'mon, let's stop making mountains out of molehills.

I'm sure if you do a search, you'll find 100s of threads on CD where people are already complaining about tipping.

I moved once because a hacking, sniffling seat mate, (I have a $10k Asia trip in 3 days, not keen on starting it ill). (U R Free to move on SWA!)
But sometimes people want just a basic flight for cheap.

I don't check bags. I don't need an airline to give me 5 tiny pretzels when I can bring my own snacks, and I don't need their water when I can also bring my own reusable water bottle onboard. I've never had a reason to change or cancel my flight, so that perk is wasted on me. And I really don't care where I sit on a plane.

To fly to Orlando on Southwest, it's $120. On Frontier it's $49. So I would be paying $70 for a few pretzels and a cup of water? Doesn't sound like that great of a deal.

I've already done that on other airlines. Does not trouble me in the least.

What DOES trouble me, is what the Frontier crew is earning. Is it so low that they NEED tips in order to survive?

People love to disparage flight attendants as "Flying Waitresses/ers". They are not. They are service professionals who are trained in CPR, first aid, and MOST IMPORTANT - in getting your butt out of the plane should the need arise.

I'm going to check to see how much they are earning at Frontier. With such an important job, it should be enough that it does not necessitate tips.

Although I am happy to tip.

That's right. And I have no problem with that. You can also choose which airline to give your business to. In socialist countries you get to fly the state airline, which is worse than anything you can imagine when compared to American airlines.

Miss that Frontier flight and its $99 to rebook to another one vs free SW rebook, SW seats are waaaay more comfortable, and that 1-2" more of legroom make a huge difference in comfort, but most could care less about the 50 cents of snack we receive as a meal now adays.

I take Frontier alot and know what im getting, so until Delta can get me somewhere for $40-100RT, ill just suffer in coach in Frontier for the 1-2hrs and enjoy my savings or put it towards the rental car or parking

HHAs, for example, make far less than flight attendants and they don't get tips. Asking for tips does not automatically mean one is barely earning a living. Tipping is just ubiquitous now.
