Hello. We are a family of 4, with 2 teen boys, looking at spending 8-10 days in either the US or British Virgin Islands in December.
Does anyone have experience with either location? I'd love to hear why you chose one over the other. I tried to search this forum but nothing was popping up. Perhaps my search criteria was flawed...
Anyway, we enjoy hiking, nature, kayaking, scuba/snorkeling, history and science museums, local craft & food markets, casual eateries, and a general laid-back vibe. We don't care for bars, nightlife, upscale dining, or casinos.

TIA for any tips you can share.
I fell in love with the BVIs years ago. We stayed in an apartment hotel in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola and took day/ferry trips to other BVI islands. Very casual, very laid back. There were no history or science museums to my knowledge. Most of the bars are also restaurants (casual), not rowdy. BVIs are not the place to go for the late night/casino/disco vibe. We visited Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and took a couple of snorkeling trips. Sorry that we missed Virgin Gorda. It's on my list.
We also spent a week or so on St Croix (USVI). Beautiful but after our time in the BVIs it felt a little too much like home. Driving around, gorgeous scenery, then there would be a strip mall (small) like you'd see in any US city. We didn't spend any time in St. Thomas except for traveling. St. John might be an idea for you. We didn't stay there, floated past on the way to Norman Island for snorkeling (LOL), it's also on my bucket list.
BVI are quite nice. Remember they were hit by hurricane in 2017, so lots of places no doubt are still closed and I’d expect lots of construction happening.
Travel talk online website has lots of discussion on the BVI.
