Danish traveler Torbjorn Pedersen says he is the first person to visit every country in the world — without flying.
It’s a feat that took 10 years to accomplish — with average costs of around $20 a day, he said.
I read about that guy! Amazing. Ten years of his life. And what danger he must have encountered in some of those sketchy countries.
It helped that he had worked in the cargo ship industry so had connections to be a passenger, which I don't think the average person can do. I read he had some sponsors, too.

Until I read this story, I was proud of my 2-1/2 month trip visiting 44 states in the USA without flying at age 19, back in 1970.
I didn't have corporate financial support, but with 25-30 cent gas then I only spend about $500 total.
It's only cheap if you don't value you time. Most people simply can't afford to take the amount of time required to cross an ocean via water instead of air.

As emphasized by the 'Sustainability' scientist 7 Oct... "You're gonna fire me because I wont take a 12 hr plane ride, but instead am taking a 4 week voyage / train (Where I promise to work / be available from the ship)"
The climate researcher who avoids flying because of its carbon footprint was fired for not getting on a plane
There are periods in your life when doing the ocean / rail / bus route is not going to ruin your month / yr. The routing might be very unique and interesting. I find a lot of time to think and respond to emails and do research / spreadsheets while on a boat vs a plane. (too many interruptions). There is NO ONE on deck / in the ship library from 3AM > 9AM.
Seems like this scientist was stretching the company policy, because his route had a lot of unique (and likely dangerous) land crossings. My employer was not keen on being put at risk for ransom / national crisis exposure / evacuations. Spouse would have loved the double life insurance pay-out.

Yep. I call it insane myself, especially living like that, but to each their own
If I was getting paid a nice salary and could save, I wouldn't mind doing something like this. Yes, there's something to be said about the memories, etc., but memories aren't going to pay my bills when I get back
