I don't know that this would necessarily interest anyone here, but I was intrigued by the idea of this vacation-tour company, Young Pioneers, that take you to dicey places.

When I first saw the write-up, I thought it was a joke. "Destinations your mother would rather you stay away from."

Would you be that adventurous?

Oh hell yeah, I'm bookmarking this.

I wouldn't go to North Korea, I'm too much of a social dumb*** and would probably end up the next Otto Warmbier. But the Burundi/DRC/Rwanda/Uganda one looks cool. I was actually a little obsessed with the DRC for a bit recently. I love Central Asia too, so the Ashgabat and Mongolia ones would be tight.

I'd also expect the people who go on these tours to be more interesting than average, so I'd try to make some friends on it.

They have former Soviet Union tours that include Chechnya and Chernobyl. That would be a bit out there in current political climate.

Not for me. Americans are not safe in N Korea. I am old enough to know not to go there.

Has any American tourist ever come to harm in North Korea? I mean genuine tourist, not a missionary, or Korean with a US passport.

Quote:
Otto Frederick Warmbier (December 12, 1994 – June 19, 2017) was an American college student who was imprisoned in North Korea in 2016 on a charge of subversion. In June 2017, he was released by North Korea in a vegetative state and died soon afterwards. Warmbier entered North Korea as part of a guided tour group on December 29, 2015. On January 2, 2016, he was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport while awaiting departure from the country. He was convicted of attempting to steal a propaganda poster from his hotel, for which he was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment with hard labor.
He used the tour company that is the subject of this thread.

You might be interested in a North Korea trip report filed on Flyertalk around 4 years ago.

I don't think those were designed during, or for, the current political climate.

Georgia would be a good one, though (speaking of Chechnya and the Caucasus). Especially if the group just happened to be there during a big protest. And I'm sure the kiddies would enjoy tours of traditional Georgian wine-making operations, and wine-tasting.
