My husband and I know where we want to go (south of France, Italy, Czech) but we're not sure the best time to go. We're looking to do two weeks sometime between Jul 1 - Sept 30. Is there anything in particular going on that would make Sept better than Jul or Aug? I'm thinking weather, festivals, etc.

Also, I was thinking of getting the unlimited Eurail passes (they're around $1k each for 2 weeks of travel). Is this a better deal than just getting tickets between cities? We're budgeting about $5k for the two weeks (our airfare to/from Europe is basically free, because my husband is military...so I'm thinking it needs to cover travel between countries and hotels). Is that a fair amount?

Thanks

i was in paris 2 years ago during september and the weather is much better than the summers there plus everyone is back at work from their summer vacations so it is busy and lively.
avoid around 9/11 though because i flew back around that date and they tore apart my bags and actually took a nail clipper that didn't even have a nail file attached to it.
$5k for 2 weeks can be a really good time if you avoid shopping on the via veneto or champs elysee.

We went in September last year and drove through 5 different countries. The weather was great and it wasn't too crowded. I'm currently in Poland and it is beyond freezing and the roads are terrible. I'd go either during spring or fall, when it tends to be less crowded and not too hot.

Fall is much better - less crowds, less expensive, and the weather is still good.

This site is good at telling you what's going on when.
What's On When

One of the most fun holidays in France is the summer music festival.
The entire country celebrates it on June 21st. No matter where you are, it will be happening.
Fete De La Musique
Music in the streets all over the place--we just loved it.
more about the festival
And it was early summer, so not that crowded.
But if you went in the fall, for sure there would be wine festivals. Just have to look out for the rain.
