I certainly wouldn't make excuses for them in any way, but I do know that a gang mentality can be formed starting out with kids who want something to belong to. I know my youngest son grew up without a dad or any real male leadership in his life. At 19, he is overly loyal to his male friends. He wants that 'we have each other' kind of bond. He will give them money, stand up for them and would lie for them. Luckily, he has never been in a gang, but I do think he would be a candidate.
I think this is also the case with many of these young males who end up in gangs. They desperately want to be validated and unfortunately, the validation comes from older members who lead them into a life of crime.
I still don't think psychology should be used to pat them on the head. The only way to deter this behavior is strong laws with strict penalties. Their fear has to be greater than their need. Letting them hob nob in a jail arena isn't productive. If anything, it makes them worse.
I wholeheartedly agree! These older gang "recruiters" do look for people who want to belong to something at young ages, since they are easier to lure in with the whole "we well protect you from them [bullies] and we'll be your friends" line. These kids that get lured in don't think about the consequences that joining a violent gang will have in their future. Many just think about what's going on right then and now. It's even more compelling to joining a gang if you know there's lots of money involved, especially if the kids come from a family who is heavily struggling financially.
If kids were taught just how destructive joining violent gangs will be to their lives and the lives of their family members, maybe they would think twice before joining one. Other than making the laws more strict, doing work and improving these communities that are afflicted with these violent gangs issues would also be helpful.

Gang recruiters have more than a little in common with pedophiles.
If there was only some way that gang recruiters could wind up on sex offender lists, they deserve to be on them more than some very trivial offenders like those who've committed indecent exposure, public nudity, etc.
These people are happy to go to prison so they can clique up with their homies and cause problems for more people. Why are they afforded this oppurtunity?Build more segregated housing and keep these punks from harming others.
Nah....I say mix the gang members all up wearing their colors in one big room and give them each a ice pick...
People want money. Gangs are an easy way of getting in with large amounts of money but this is just an illusion and most that join just run around as foot soldiers and end in dead or in prison. What a waste.
I don't agree. If found guilty they should be locked in a cell with a member of a rival gang and given bats. Then let the guards that a long lunch break. The last one living should then be executed for breathing.
The criminal justice system in this country is way too soft on offenders and I'm not talking about just gang members. If you're conviced of rape you should have your "manhood" removed on the spot. Murders should be executed in the court room as soon as the verdict is read etc etc. Our justice system is a nothing more than a bunch of money hungry cry babies that can be bought and sold. If the punishment fit the crime our prisions would be a lot less over crowded and maximum security facilities would not be needed.
Have I ever been a victim, NO. But I have been in two instances where I would have been a victim if I wasn't prepared.
