Hi All,

I was thinking of visiting Tucson in September (13 to 25th), staying at the Red Roof Inn, 4940 W Ina Rd.

Having read some (not all) of the posts concerning crime in certain parts of the city, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a good idea.

Will the weather be suitable? Heat is not a problem, but what about rain? I don't expect sunshine all day every day (I'm British!), but don't want to be flooded out.

I enjoyed my trip to Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Monument valley last year, and really would like to see the Southern part of the state too.

Any advice, please?

DW

That part of town is OK except it is on the extreme west side so you won't see much of Tucson from there.

Monsoon is over by mid-September so it will likely be dry (very), sunny, and warm. You should expect sunny skies all day, every day you are here and should demand your money back if you don't have them.

You'll be fine. Relax, enjoy the trip.

The weather will be fine in Tucson in September, your location is also ok. To really appreciate Tucson and the area you have to do some hiking..something the local people dont do much of. I would suggest hiking finger rock trail and ventana canyon trail, start early. For the ventana canyon trail , hike up to the Window rock, its a view even most Tucsonans never see. have lunch at the window and hike back taking the esperero trail into ventana canyon. this is about 13-14 miles..well worth the photos you will get. My 16 year old does it with me and we love hiking the catalina Mountains. this hike will be a day hike, and you will want a cold one after!! The finger rock trail is also one of my favorites about 2.5 hours to the top, very good views from thimbal peak, you can drop into pima canyon from this trail and take pima trail. There are several places to hike here..saguaro national monument is filled with tourists and people that just want a picture of a cactus. I will admitt iI hike the monument trails also but on the east side. ( douglas trail ) on east speedway blvd. Kartchner Caverns is a good day trip, as well as Tombstone.( same day ). If you have any questions about this area I will give you the truth..I travel alot..even did a UK tour with my wife a few years ago.Southern Az. is good place to vacation, try some mexican food and enjoy....and one other thing..just like the UK if you do 65 on the freeway, you will get run over! speed limit here is 75 on the freeway, 78 is good. let me know if you have any questions on any tourist traps. nikkj123@msn.com Ken

The Red Roof Inn you specified is in the Town of Marana. Marana is a wonderful, growing town, to the northwest of Tucson. They were mostly a farming and agriculture town years ago, but have expanded nicely with the times. What type of things do you want to do/see when you get to the Tucson area? How many days do you have here? As the other poster said, the weather should be very nice that time of year, so don't worry about that. They also covered the hiking experience very well, so I don't have to even try that!
Whatever you do here... enjoy our wonderful views of the mountains, and perhaps have a margarita at one of our many delicious, authentic, Mexican restaurants!

Yes I've actually stayed at that hotel a few times, the area it's in is fine.

Like janelandbob asked above, what would you like to do?

Agree with the lot above, as long as you're doing strictly Tucson stuff, like:
Tucson Mtns. area (petroglyphs/picturerock, saguaro natl.park west, arizona sonoran desert museum, mt. lemmon hwy, and of course the best mexican food in town is at El Charro's (several locations across Tucson). Redroof Inn is your best bet for all that "Tucson Basin" fun outdoor stuff. Ina Road & I-10 are convenient to most everything.

Keep in mind that I-10 is undergoing a major construction in Tucson. Some on/off ramps are closed in town. Here is a link you can click-on, to keep up to date on the road issues as your trip gets closer: http://www.i10tucsondistrict.com/29toP.htmlttp:// (broken link)

If you're exploring further southeast, down to the area of: Tombstone, Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns, and the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains (which I sure hope you are), I'd recommend adding a stay down in that area, for that leg of the trip and save yourself some travel hours back and forth. Lodging for these tourist areas can be found in the towns of Wilcox, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, and Bisbee - and will save you 1 1/2 hours + each way driving time (more time to explore and play down there too)?

Ah yes.. the President ate there! I remember the day he was in town. A little trivia about him... Some police motor officers were helping with the escort around town. After El Nidito, President Clinton returned to Air Force One, berthed (is that right?) at DM Air Force Base. While enroute, a motor officer took a fall on his motor. Pres. Clinton ordered his personal Dr (he has one travelling with him at all times) to see to the injured officer until the ambulance arrived (he was ok.. just scraped up). He might have done some bad things, but I always thought that was pretty cool.
