I like to watch NatGEO, I always balance our kids TV viewing by getting them to watch NatGEO, or Discovery Science after they've seen their other kids programming. We say they need to learn something that they learn from, so they call it Learning TV.
However, is it me, or does the NatGEO thrive on doomsday programming? Every week there is some show that shows how all life will die, how the planet will end, how the world will flood. How the world will burn. I don't let my kids watch that, I think there is a political message in all of that, which right, or wrong, I don't care for, but aside from that, why be all pessemistic about something that may, or may not happen.
Perhaps you're confusing Nat Geo for the History Channel aka the "Armageddon / End of the World" channel? And btw, Nat Geo is owned and operated by Fox, so that's why you see all those gang and prison shows there
However, did anyone see the documentary Trouble the Water on Nat Geo? It was filmed in the midst of the hurricane Katrina and flood and the aftermath in New Orleans. It is one of the most amazing stories I've ever seen.

It is NatGeo, on channel 276 on DirecTV. The same channel with the prison shows, gang shows, border shows. Most of it is unsuitable for my kids. I did see the Katrina shows, amazing what happened there, but I don't think they emphasized enough that the flooding was caused by a broken levee, not the goverment, not directly because of Katrina either.
NatGeo has really changed. I have found a new curiosity for things around me as a result of the show, but I do agree that they show quite a bit of Doomsday stuff. I was just thinking last week that the producers must be quite a pessimistic bunch--don't rain on our parade because your life is not as happy as it could be
We've recorded quite a bit of Katrina coverage as today is the 5-year anniversary, thanks to the channel. Also, I recorded all those shows on the planets. Now that the anniversary of 9/11 is coming up, I'll be watching those shows. This is not the NatGeo of my childhood, when they only seemed to air stuff on animals, which I do find worth watching but not back then. There's more of a variety that I like--but mind you, I don't have children, so I can understand everyone else's concerns.
Same thing with the History channel. Its annoying. I think these types of doomsday shows will get more frequent as it gets closer to 2012.
