I'm going to try to post a poll. I'm curious on how you watch TV. When watching a program you're interested in, do you focus your attention on the program or do you watch while distracted? Distracted could be anything like playing a game on the phone/computer, surfing the internet, talking on the phone, etc. When it's a program I'm interested in, I focus my full attention to the program. When I feel there's nothing worth watching, I turn the TV off. I've noticed that with most people I know, even if there's nothing worth watching, they'll leave the TV running. I prefer silence, soft music, or a good book to the endless drone of boring TV shows I'm not interested in.
At home, males will focus on a program or the TV is off. Women run it as background--always on. That's common knowledge amongst media experts.
But the poll results here will be skewed towards males, because your post will get more attention by males. The males are more aware of female habits (i.e. finding TV in the background annoying or distracting in a home).
When you go to bars however, it's the other way around. Sports or news run as "background" for a male clientele. While in more female environment (stores, malls, coffee bars) TV would distract from communication and purchases.
I'm female and have the TV on most of my waking hours. I rarely watch. It's just background noise. I even leave it on when I go out to the backyard with my Kindle.
I'm a male and if I have the TV on, I'm usually only focused on what being aired. Exceptions are when the news is on, I'll usually be in the next room on the computer. If a story piques my interest, I'll get up and sit on the couch and watch that. Other times I'll get up during commercials of a show I'm watching and do whatever.

I don't even turn on the TV unless I going to watch something. I rarely even watch during the week.

Me, too. Exactly. I turn the TV on in the living room and it drones on in the background all day. However, if I'm sewing or working on something in my hobby room, I'll have the TV in there on something I'm intent on watching since I'm a captive audience. I have a small TV in my bedroom, but I have yet to watch it....
I will watch a show during dinner, usually Survivor, or NCIS, Hell's Kitchen, DWTS, Bachelorette, etc., and then for the 8:00 shows, I'll sit on the couch and flip through a magazine, or crochet, or something else while a favorite show is on. If there's nothing I'm interested on in the evening, I'll go into the office with the living room TV on in the background.
I work from home and usually have tv on as background to catch up with favorite shows I miss late at night. Because of the nature of my business my hours begin very early in the morning and usually end closer to three and four in the afternoon so I tend to not stay up pass 8 or 9 pm.
The only shows that have my complete attention and I am not distracted with computer, email or phone calls are:
True Decective
Games of thrones
Hannibal.
Then again those are shows I tend to watch twice.
