Reverse racism. Why, in this day in age, when everyone is so racially sensitive, are "they" allowed to create and advertise such a racially specific product? If someone created WET "White Entertainment Television"- there would be an uproar until it was terminated. I'm sure a million people have brought this point up in the past, but it continues to baffle me. BET has been around forever, so I can understand that it could be "grandfathered" in to today's society, but another new channel? Ridiculous.
And no, I'm not white. And I'm not black either.
There isn't a need for WET, because most of the shows on TV/cable are prodominately white.
Yes, because nonwhites should take what you give. Shouldn't want to view shows with their real life experiences. Not the show with the token nonwhite.
I do not consider TV stations intended for a specific group to be a positive. A station just for blacks? Sure, here's a few. A station for Hispanics? Here's a bunch. Gays? Absolutely. But all these targeted stations divide us as a people instead of uniting us in a common cultural experience. When I was a kid (and I'm ancient) there were only three national networks and a few local independent stations. Everybody watched the same shows because there wasn't that much choice, and this was one of the things that made this country the melting pot for lots of diverse groups.
Nowadays, with our 500 available TV channels (and still nothing good on) every group can insulate themselves in their own culture and not become part of a nationally shared cultural experience. Heck, you don't even have to learn the English language to get by any more -- there are stations to make you feel right at home, like you never left the old country. Instead of learning to live together, we become fractured as a people, and group-against-group problems develop because the groups strive to remain apart instead of assimilating. We all need to be Americans, not Southern-Americans, or African-Americans, or Hispanic-Americans or Gay-Americans.

I understand your view but I disagree. I like that I can watch Lifetime and watch movies and shows that are aimed at women viewers. I also like that if I'm in the mood for old hip hop music or to watch Soul Train reruns, there's a channel for that. I love Centric and TVOne because they show the old black sitcoms that are no longer in syndication.
I don't think it prevents me from becoming a part of a shared culture; it's just tv and on Monday - Thursday I'm watching Dancing with the stars/American Idol just like everybody else.
But the real reason behind target audiences is money. A tampon commerical probably wouldn't come on Spike TV in the middle Terminator.
Why in the world or we need a black station in 2011¿
For the same reason that we have multiple Spanish language channels. Or sports channels. Or cooking channels. Or fly fishing while underwater basket weaving channels.
