She only appeared in a handful of first season episodes.. but the ST Universe really seemed to latch onto her for some reason.. I think because of her addiction issues and overcoming them.. She was a pretty inspirational story.
She was a footnote who gained longevity of celebrity by virtue of Star Trek becoming the sort of phenomena where the fans obsess over every single aspect. Had the series died when it was canceled, Ms. Whitney would not rate a public obituary.
Anyone here able to identify Gavan O'Herlihy? He was the actor that played Chuck Cunningham, Richie's older brother on Happy Days. The character was dropped from the show in season two without providing the audience any explanation.
How about Charles Briles? Ever heard of him? He played Eugene Barkley in the first year of "The Big Valley." He was dropped from the show in the second season with the explanation that Eugene had gone to school back east.
If Star Trek had not exploded into the long running cult franchise that it did, Ms. Whitney would have enjoyed the same celebrity status as O' Herlihy and Briles...vanished into obscurity.
OP, your title to this thread is far more clever than the newspaper headline.
In thinking about these very old Star Trek episodes, it never ceases to amaze how far ahead of his time Gene Roddenberry was in creating story lines that still resonate today. It's no wonder this short series is still remembered so fondly. We see things all around us that we might have first heard of on Star Trek.
