As a big fan of the movie and huge fan of the book, I watched this and went, "Meh." I'll check it out and hope that it's good. But this trailer does not make me optimistic. I get the impression that the pitch meeting must have gone something like this:
"You know that horror novel that was a blockbuster and has been in print for over 40 years?"
"Yeah!"
"You know it was made into a movie that is considered a classic of the genre and one of the best movies ever made?"
"Yeah!!!"
"Let's do a TV show based on it --- only we'll change everything about the book and the movie!"
I saw that movie when it first came out and it was the creepiest thing I ever saw. I have not watched it since and doubt I could watch the TV show without having nightmares.
I'm a fan. They aren't "remaking" the movie...they are instead telling about a new possession. I have a feeling this will be a lot like American Horror Story...where they tell one tale a season. I will tell you...they are pushing the boundaries...and they have a HUGE budget to do so.
It's getting really good reviews. As a big fan of the book, I am inherently skeptical. But apparently the TV show is less of a remake and more of a sequel. I hope it will be good. We'll see....
It seems like one of those lazy moves where TV producers simply borrow the name of a popular property. I predict the show will fail, not that a supernatural drama won't succeed, I just don't have much faith in shows who borrow names. I also predict Lethal Weapon will not survive past season one.
