Only by an Enterprise or by other Klingons in their internal power struggles. By the end of the Dominion War when we were seeing regular Klingon appearances beyond the TNG Civil War arc it was Klingon Birds of Prey forming into squadrons with Federation Defiant class ships which served as the light forces in the hit and run combat with the Jem H'ader light forces. Before then there were skirmishes where total war was not involved, and when total war was shown on the TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise, the Klingons were about to achieve total victory.
From the beginning humans were shown to be a physical match for Klingons with or without forehead ridges. As opposed to Spock's superhuman strength. What the Klingons had was aggression and the willingness to battle, where most humans like Jake Sisco tried to avoid mixing it up. But when fighting started human/Federation martial arts countered the Klingons rage
Not where ships battled each other, nearly any time it involved physical combat.
There was always a lot of posturing, some noise and then the Klingon seems to get thumped. Even Worf routinely couldn't hold his own.
The Borg? While they got smacked in the end, they always seemed to take out their share of countless millions first.
Didn't Worf battle his way through a series of Jem'hadar warriors, each one successfully tougher? I remember he had trouble with the first, and they kind of mocked him since it was considered a child of their race. However, Worf learned and adapted and kept on winning.
There are differences between the UFP and its point of view about fighting battles depending on when you consider. The early Federation had to to exist. When we get to tos they are established as a localized power, but just getting into the larger picture. By the time tng comes, they've become a central power. All of this took a lot of battles and the establishment that if they have a better way they will use it, but if not they have photon torpedos. Tng was the pax of Rome. Your empire (and the Federation is an empire) always has and expiration date.
They could fight well. When meeting the Klingons, they saw fierce warriors, but as they ceased to be enemies and discoverd the individual, it was more the out front warrior attitude that made them look like such tough and strong men and women. And when it was survival to their peaceful world after the galactic wars started, humans rediscovered their warlike side and grew to respect the Klingons.
After? The empires are damaged and weakened, waiting for the next attack, which comes. The Klingons will continue to be warriors, but the Federation troops surviving the war will have to do the same, as now they are just as easy to pick away one area at a time.
As a longtime trek fan(atic) I appreciate how they've shaped the arc in a very realistic way. You only get to be the biggest and best for a little while, and then you pay for it.
