Filming will start on a Sherlock special next January, 2015. After the special airs they release three (3) new episodes in the series.

Gotta love British television, where getting folks to make more episodes is a little like pulling teeth.

Quality better than quantity perhaps?

Let's hope. I did enjoy the first show of this season for obvious reasons: Seeing Watson's reaction to Holmes being alive, but after that it was not nearly as good. It seemed less focused and a bit gimicky, and not enough focus on mystery. I hope if it returns it returns to form.

Yep. Very much agreed.

I loved Series 1. Truly genius. Brilliant. Flawless.

Series 2 was actually kind of bad. Unfocused, gimmicky, even boring at times. And it's pretty sad when Doyle's portrayal of a great woman character (Irene Adler) showed more enlightenment 100 years ago than Moffat's did in the 21st century. I sometimes wonder if Moffat should stop watching porn while he writes scripts. And I say that as someone who has been a Moffat fan for years.

Series 3 was a marked improvement, but still did not return to Series 1's brilliance.

Almost the same,
Loved S1
Thought S2 was sort of bad
Though S3 SUCKED.

Of course its so much more disappointing and hard to walk away from given that you know how good it can be and how much I loved S1

One of my favorite series, but I agree that British tv shows have far too few episodes per season. First thought that comes to mind is, as someone pointed out, quality of quantity, but I've seen many British shows that were average and many American ones that also had great quality like Prison Break, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Arrow, and others.

So while series like Sherlock and Downton Abbey are of great quality, I think it's just the way Brits make shows there for whatever reason. If anyone from Great Britain frequents this forum it'd be interesting to hear, well read, their thoughts on this. For American viewers though it is frustrating. The one thing I notice is that oftentimes their episodes last as long as an hour and a half, so basically the length of two episodes of an American or Canadian series.

Interesting to note also that they skipped a year because the actors and I'm guessing the director, etc, had other obligations, so they had to wait until they were all free to make another season. I know with Doc Martin a year or so was skipped between seasons as well at least twice.
