Is this one of those shows that you need to watch several episodes before it comes alive? Because I watched the first episode and found it painfully unfunny.

First episode this season or first episode of season 1? Because in a way S1 E1 sets up the ending of the first episode this season.
Season 1 episode 1. Really wanted to like it. Ended up really hating it. But maybe it’s one of those shows that took a while to find its way? Is it?
Maybe. But I doubt it. I liked it from the very first episode. However, a friend of mine had the same reaction to it as you did: she didn’t think it was funny and said, “I don’t get it. All he seems to do is get drunk and best people up.” So, it’s one of those shows that either appeals to your sense of humor or doesn’t.
Nevertheless, there’s something to be said for a show appealing to you at a certain point in your life. A while back, I tried to watch the first episode of Mindhunter and switched it off mid-way through. Then, a couple of years later, I spoke to someone who talked about how great it was. So, I gave it another chance… and ended up loving it. Go figure.
Just watched the last episode, it ended appropriately.
