In case Netflix’s latest offering has escaped your radar, here’s a rundown of the plot: Jared Leto joins the yakuza. Obviously, the premise raised some red flags. Many took to Twitter to voice their displeasure at yet another white savior movie, calling the centering of a film about Asian culture around a white lead a form of whitewashing, and yet another missed opportunity to cast an Asian or Asian American lead. Others noted that there’s no precedent for the yakuza accepting a white American into their ranks, and that the title of “outsider” is misleading when the yakuza portray themselves as outsiders to begin with.
Well they can counter it by making a movie about the American Mafia where a Japanese gangster arrives and takes over as capo di tuti capo.
Or make a biker gang flick set in the sixties where a Japanese biker arrives and kills Sonny Barger in a chain fight, and becomes president of the Angels.
It becomes unbearable at times when people look for any reason to complain about something they don't like. If people want more culturally sensitive shows they should make those shows themselves and enjoy all the profits they make from them. Stop trying to force everyone else to create your artistic vision.
I couldn't watch the whole thing just found it boring.
Which is sad because it's pretty obvious the source material was Nick Zappetti, a real life American, who in post WW2 Japan was able to profit from the black market and establish himself among the Japanese underworld (his pizza restaurant still exists in Tokyo). I believe at one point Scorsese was interested in making a movie about Nick.
I like Jared Leto but his talents were wasted here.
This is called "fiction" for a reason. Whether or not something can happen in real life was never a qualifier as far as Netflix/Hollywood is concerned.
