Sipowicz and Franz seemed like they were made for each other. I think there's an easy attraction to characters who may have more than their share of flaws but deep down are truly good people.
I'd also welcome guest appearances by James McDaniel and Esai Morales, I thought their characters were good fits in the squad.

No, that was a joke. There are so many remakes and reboots of iconic characters, such as MacGuyver and Magnum, I could see a Kojak remake coming in the future. I agree with your opinion about Telly Savalas.
I wish that they kept the Sipowicz character alive so that Dennis Franz could make an occasional guest appearance.

No reason Dennis Franz couldn't play Andy in flashback scenes, like Milo Ventimiglia playing Jack Pierson in the past on This Is Us.
I have DirectTV and they've rerun the entire series several times on what I believe is a channel exclusive to their network. Still one of my all time favorite series.
I hung in with that show despite David Caruso. Didn't like him. Once he was gone, I think it was one of the best network shows ever, and I've watched the entire series a few times, most recently right now. Best for me were the seasons with with Ricky Schroeder. He and Franz had a chemistry that wasn't there with the other guys, although Jimmy Smits was very, very good with others in the cast.
