Hello,
So I'm very aware that you'd have to be nuts riding a scooter or motorcycle around San Juan. However, I really want to get one anyway. Insurance, gas, and buying one is so much cheaper than a car.

With that said, if I have a scooter (NOT a motorcycle), will I still be able to get around the Island alright? The DMV website is all in Espanol. Are scooters allowed on the highways? Is it possible just to take the back roads around? Will it be hard driving to and from Old San Juan area on occasion? Do I need to get a motorcycle license if it's just a scooter (maybe 150cc or less)?

I've found a lot of articles about how strict the motorcycle laws are, which I'm fine with. Just wondering if scooters will be able to get me everywhere.

Let me start by saying i know this is an old post...but info was requested and many people do search here.

I live on the north west corner of the island and ride a 150cc scooter everyday. I have rode to San Juan on a few occasions (for me its almost 90 miles and 2.5 hours). If you ride smart you can ride the entire island on the scooter.
As for riding on the highway, You are aloud but i would not recommend it since people here cannot drive very well. You will need an endorsement on your license for and scooter you ride (50cc and up). You will also have to have a helmet, pants, gloves and for night riding a reflective vest.
Oh one more thing about riding the highways, you cannot ride on ANY TOLL ROAD its a ticket if you get caught so for me riding from home to SJ its the old highway 2 and a few detours along the beaches.
Your tags/insurance will run about $175 a year and i get 75 mpg (currently $5 to fill up)
