Good day.... My boyfriend and I are considering living in or off of St.John on his boat.
I have a cleaning business here in the US and am wondering what kind of work I can find in St. John... Ie: bartender, cashier, cleaning lady? etc..... I realize the season is from November until April (as I live in Florida and we have the same seasonal "snow birds").
He will be sailing there by the end of the year and I will join him and live on the boat.
My concern is money and making it..... Do we need a car or can we get around on a bicycle??? I am debating on shipping my car there.
Are there any free places to anchor a sailboat? What do the mooring fields cost if any??
ANY ADVICE ON RELOCATING TO ST. JOHN WOULD BE HELPFUL....
There is no free long term mooring but you'll find the pricing information on the site or via the forum to which several St John residents contribute regularly. Happy researching!
You will be limited these days trying to get a mooring set and permitted in the Virgin Islands. You can read the "rules" about long term anchoring and mooring until you're blue in the face, but DPNR will do what it wants to you. The longer you're "anchored", the more they can charge you. Get local liveaboards to give you advice on locating and setting mooring gear. Coral Bay may change dramatically in the next couple of years, and there will be nothing else available on that end of St. John. You're looking at Great Cruz or Chocolate Hole, which are pretty crowded. And it's a truly f'd up system.
Also limited on St. Thomas. Water Island, because it's a little difficult for weekend sailors to get to their boat, offers good holding in Elephant Bay, but TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN THE MOORING FIELD BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.
It can still be done (liveaboard), but don't ask DPNR for any guidance or expose yourself to their attention. Just get their "rules" and get local boaters to direct you around. I gave up my mooring in Cowpet Bay and another one in Elephant Bay.
