my husband and i are moving to puerto rico, we have 15 & 13 yr old daughters 6 & 3 yr old sons...I have researched enough to know that english based private schools are too expensive as we have four kids who would be attending...I have found anywhere from $5,000 up to 15,000 per year per kid...WHAT ARE MY OTHER OPTIONS? As public schools are solely spanish curriculum not sure what else I should be looking for...homeschooling? The girls speak basic spanish and my oldest son is currently in spanish immersion here in MN...however nowhere close to being able to make it in spanish speaking public school in PR. We obviously do prefer to be close to the water, we will rent for the first year, bring our own vehicles there, as well as our pets and basically we cannot get started until schooling is established...any information would be appreciated, thanks!
You should definitely look into homeschooling! It's a great option no matter where you live. Most programs are excellent and don't require instruction from a teacher (parent, tutor, etc.) because all instruction is contained in the book/program. For math I use a program called Teaching Textbooks that provides lessons, tests and grading using a computer program. Other subjects, such as biology, are done using textbooks. Another option is an online school program! If you decide to move to PR and homeschool there is a great group of PR homeschoolers on Facebook who can answer any questions you might have.
So glad to hear there is a strong network of home-schooling families on the island. My daughter (10 in a few weeks) has been home-schooling with Time4Learning and we both really enjoy the program. It's only about $20 a month for middle and lower grades and, I think, $30 for high-school students. I believe they offer a discount for multiple students. I am not affiliated with them. Just really, really happy with their program. We're thinking of enrolling in the nearest public school for socialization and language reasons but continuing with the home-schooling program to make sure she doesn't fall behind in learning due to the learning curve of grasping a new language.
