Maybe she wanted to be able to get a roommate if need be. Maybe she rented the place when she had a decent job?
The school debt is absurd, yes. She's certainly not the only one who bought into the idea that she should "to get a good job, get a good education." It's a mistake that many people make, especially when they are desperate. I also find that working-class people make this mistake more often than other people, as they've poignantly bought the idea that college is a big deal.
