I have a question hopefully someone here can answer. A friend is collecting unemployment benefits (NJ).

Would receiving money from a family member (within the legal limit) affect his benefits? Would that be considered income? From what I can find on the internet, the answer is no, but he'd like to be sure.

Thanks in advance...

I don't see how it would affect his benefits... they don't monitor your bank accounts do they?

I was drawing Georgia unemployment... got a job in WA and borrowed $4000 from my parents to move cross country and get settled, and still collected the last 2 weeks of Georgia UI for the time from when I left the state till the time I started the job in WA.

U/E is not a means-tested benefit like welfare or food stamps. If you were making $200k a year and managed to bank a ton of money and then got laid off, you can still collect.

You should be fine. I had a company that did not pay me all of my vacation time when I was laid off. It took me from Feb. until late March to get them to agree to pay me. I called EDD and asked if I needed to claim the money and they said no, that you only need to claim wages and hours worked and while it was a payment from an employer, as it was neither wages or payment for other hours worked, I was in the clear.
