Hi guys,

I am currently on unemployment and I plan to go to Vancouver until October. Am I still eligible for unemployment and should I still apply? Thanks.

If you are eligible then why would you not apply?

Someone told me that if I leave the country I would not be eligible for UI benefits. But is Canada one of the countries where I would be eligible to collect?

Check the Rules for your State. Guessing you'll need to notify the UI Agency of being out of your normal Labor Mkt area (for A&A = Available & Able to Search for &/or Accept Work). Plus, afaik, Canada currently has Travel Restrictions including Quarantine = ~2 Weeks Ineligibility (make sure to obtain Documentation for the specific period of Mandatory Quarantine to avoid running into issues of having to get a Dr's Verif of "release" for A&A).

ETA: Checked your Profile = NYS; here's a Thread that has the specific Instructions already addressed >> https://www.city-data.com/forum/unem...ye-canada.html There are a few more Threads, if you opt to use the Search function, but this one was the shortest.

If the purpose of your trip to Canada is not to look for gainful employment, you would be deemed ineligible for benefits.

If you have verifiable work authorization in Canada AND your skill sets are for employment opportunities readily available in Canada AND you notify NYS Unemployment in advance of the trip AND you are granted permission AND you follow the exact precise claim and work search verification process AND you don't do anything that makes them think you're on vacation, you will be eligible for benefits. However, due to the current administration's belief that anyone collecting government benefits while outside the US is somehow engaged in fraud, actual benefits may be accrued but not paid until you physically return to the US. Right now it's hit and miss as to who gets paid while outside the US while conducting authorized and approved work searches in the two border countries.
