A question about unemployment. I worked in state A and was laid off(worked from July 2008 to January 2009). I was on severance so I never filed a unemployment claim, as I found a job in state B before my severance was up(though I had to take a pay cut).
The second job is a temp position(what I'm doing now) and will run out in about 6 weeks. My question is, can I file unemployment in state A for the first job? After that is over can I file for the second after it is over(if I am still unemployed)? I wouldn't be taking any more unemployment then if I had been employed continuously, but I'm not sure how that would work. If I can't file both can I just file the first claim? I do have an agreement from my first employer saying they will not contest an unemployment claim but I'm not sure if this is allowed or not.
You might not qualify for state A if that is the only work you did. If you worked for a while before July 2008 in state A, I think you will qualify. The only way to know is to file a claim. The amount would be for the time you were unemployed between the job in state A and the job in state B.
Same thing with state B -- when the temp job is over, file a claim from state B and continue looking for work.
I think most states have a one-week waiting period, meaning if you are unemployed for just a week, you don't collect anything (makes sense, since a week is a really short period of time to be unemployed!)
When your employer says they will not contest an unemployment claim, it means exactly what it says. Some employers are greedy and say that you are laid off but then turn around and contest the unemployment claim (to save themselves some unemployment tax money) by making up something about workplace conduct.

Can anyone please tell me how the unemployment benefit per week is calculated in this case? Will they add the amount from State A to State B and average out the pay?
In my case State B where I am applying pays more than double than State A. Is it as simple as (maximum benefit/week for State A + maximum benefit/week for State B)/2? I am assuming I qualify for maximum benefit in either state above.
Please reply if you know. I don't see any such calculators online.
What difference does it make? Apply for unemployment and they will calculate it for you.
