What if the E.T.'s landing is actually "the rapture" (second coming) and all the hardcore religious fanatics decide it's a trick and try to kill the aliens and it starts the "100 years of war"?
Maybe Jesus don't come wearing a white robe with a crown.
Well first things first, how did they land? Did they destroy a city to land on it? Did they land and make first contact in a peaceful way?
Honestly we'll probably know part of their intentions before we ever talked to them.
But at any rate, you'd have to be rational about the situation. Humans, for whatever reason, usually destroy an inferior race when we encounter one. This is the basic rule of the universe, survival of the fittest.
But on the other hand, if a race was capable of interstellar space travel, they would probably have figured out means of matter manipulation into which they wouldn't need anything from our pesky little planet. This is probably why we haven't encountered aliens, we're just to insignificant. But if they landed, perhaps they think they could help us, I don't know.

Run like heLL. As Stephen Hawkins stated, "It may not be the wisest course of action for humanity to advertise our presence to other intelligent, alien life forms."
I think it would be the coolest thing EVER! Imagine how much we could learn about our universe from a being that was able to get here -- SAFELY! -- from far beyond what we're able to see, reach or even know right now. Awesome!
