I am from Singapore and was thinking about this question.. After independence from British rule for a few decades, what ties still bind UK and Singapore together ?
Singapore and the UK remain major trading partners and Singapore is an important financial centre trading in the Far East. There are also cultural ties in relation to the Commonwealth, as well as historic ties than still bind the two nations.
The English language, British colonial legacy (e.g. place names, venerable buildings like St. Andrew's, Raffles, Fullerton), the Commonwealth, many Singaporeans aspire to live and work in the UK, British culture including pop music, TV, films via the language, British tourists and ex-pats, nostalgia, a lot of Australians also visiting Singapore.
A lot of things. Oddly cricket never gained popularity in S'pore among the locals though.
I would say in nowhere in Asia is the British imprint stronger than in Singapore. My mother and her generation grew up learning Shakespeare, Dickens, about all those old British royals.etc. Singapore is also the only mainland Eurasian country (well ok technically not mainland but the strait is more like a little river) with a large percentage who speak English as a FIRST language. For better of worse, many Singaporeans still live under the shadow of the British Empire.
